We're not particularly interested in rescue narratives. Or perfect endings. Or pretending everything happens for a reason.

The site explores what we build to survive, how those adaptations follow us, and what becomes possible when we begin to understand them before asking them to change.
Michael E. Merritt is a playwright, author, and registered nurse whose work explores what we build to survive—and what happens when we finally begin to see it.
His work includes the play What the Hell Happened!? An Honest Question in Two Acts, the memoir Love Is Not the Cure: My Story of Trauma and Survival Intelligence, and Survival Intelligence: Understanding What We Build to Survive, the short guide introducing the framework that emerged from his attempt to make sense of his own life.
Across theatre, memoir, and nonfiction, Michael writes about survival without turning it into a redemption story. He isn't interested in promising that everything heals, insisting that everything happens for a reason, or asking people to forgive what should never have happened.
He's interested in what remains.The things we built. The lives we made with them. The people who stayed. The things we lost. And what becomes possible when we stop asking, What's wrong with me? and begin asking, What did this once do for me?
Michael is the founder of 21st and 10th Studio, where he developing stories about memory, survival, love, and the complicated business of being human.

21st and 10th Studio is named for an intersection in New York City, where Michael had his first creative idea: The Guardians, a musical.
There was no studio then. No plays. No books. No framework.
Just an idea.
The name marks the place where it started.
21st and 10th Studio is where creativity continues.
